A subspecies of the yeast-like basidiomycete Pseudozyma, which belongs to the family of Ustilaginaceae, was identified as an epiphyt of Arabidopsis thaliana leaves. It is known that Pseudozyma can strongly influence its microbial community for example by inhibiting the growth of powdery mildews. In my PhD I am studying the role of Pseudozyma in the Arabidopsis thaliana phyllosphere. Because of its close relation to pathogenic Ustilaginomycetes I also want to study a potential role of Pseudozyma as a plant pathogen and how its lifestyle influences the leaf microbiome.
